A poor diet and dental decay

• Sugary breakfast: According to Philip Carlo's book, The Night Stalker, Ramirez often began his day with sugar-coated cereal and Coca-Cola.
• Teenage junk food: As a teenager, Ramirez was known to shoplift junk food. His childhood friend Ray Garcia noted that Ramirez had poor dental hygiene even as a youth.
• Drug abuse: His diet was worsened by a heavy addiction to cocaine, which, along with his poor eating habits, led to severe dental decay.
• Missing and decayed teeth: At his trial, forensic dentists testified that Ramirez had nine decayed teeth and was missing several others.
• Witness accounts: His recognizable, damaged teeth were described by several surviving victims and witnesses and became a factor in his eventual capture.
