I'm new to this group so this may have come up before, but I'll ask it anyway.

My partner (m2f, early stages) has opened up to their friends to generally supportive reactions. Encouraged by this they have made huge leaps forward in confidence, but the sudden appearance of female clothes and talk of grs has intimidated their direct family who are like scared deer in the headlights trying to process it all, and as a result have they have made hurtful and out of character comments. I can sympathise as this was a shock to them and I know they are finding the situation really scary and fear for their son. I have had some time to process this change and see its merits, but it is out of the blue for them.

My question is: How do I encourage my partner to take small steps at a time so not to alienate their loved ones, without holding them back? Is this the wrong thing to do? They will be devastated if they can't get their family's approval.
