In my country they almost make you follow football whether you want it or not, just walking in the street you see in all cafes the matches going on, you subconsciously stop watching almost as if to act NT or something, my "friends" (friends of my uncle really) talk about it all day, etc

Empty life during free time. Their brain needs to make them emotionally attached to something so that it feels stimulated and they choose that which is easily available and they are familiar with. They get happy with football, they get angry with it, they laugh, they cry, etc

And we are tribal social beings, the tribe is part of our identity, nowadays there is no such thing as tribe in many places and they just choose a football team as their tribe, they feel like they belong and it's something that entertains them without making them think too much.
