This message may be a stretch but i just have to get this off my chest. (This might be cope idk)
I am saying that looks do not matter because in reality, it doesnt. Power matters the most.
If you look at the beauty standards right now, its mainly to euro/caucasian people. There is a reason for this. White people are just the most powerful right now.
When Imperial China or traditional Chinese empires were dominant in East Asia (especially during dynasties like the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing), the beauty standards in the region were mostly centered around East Asian features, especially Han Chinese ideals. This is because China's political, cultural, and economic power had a massive influence on neighboring countries like Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. (You can also see this because the entire owrld was obsessed with silk clothes, im not going into that but i think you understand what i mean)
Now lets go a little further to future in 1800s; Europe (mainly france and UK) was in power. Because Europe colonized much of the world and controlled global trade, media, and politics, European ideals of beauty began to spread globally, especially:
Fair skin (linked to wealth, status, and whiteness)
Corseted, slim waists and curvy figures in women (especially in Victorian Britain).
Light hair and eyes were admired in many regions due to Western influence
When europe was in power the beauty standard was now your regular victorian white lady
Therefore does looks matter? No does Power matter, Yes. (Like money popularity able to control the situation)
Beauty is shaped by those who control the narrative
