The amount of attention Luigi Mangione has gotten from the mainstream media is unusual, especially when you compare it to how other whistleblowers and controversial figures are treated. For someone who just killed a CEO Mangione’s rapid rise in popularity, with endless media coverage, fan followings, and even merchandise, feels manufactured.
Thomas Crooks, the one featured in the BlackRock video, who just so happened to have a ladder near a BlackRock building that was coincidentally unguarded on the day of Trump’s assassination attempt, barely made it into the mainstream news, let alone stay there past the following days of Trump shooting.
Mangione’s extradition was followed by heavily armed NYPD officers and even surveilled from a helicopter.
The high level of law enforcement presence and his new appearance seems to be designed to maximize public input, and present Mangione not as a typical criminal, but as someone worthy of attention or even hero worship.
Apprehended appearance
Extradition appearance
He was arrested in a McDonald’s, by an officer named Fryes
They want to elevate his persona, turning him into a larger than life figure whose narrative can be shaped and controlled. This deliberate image building, as well as the intense media coverage, makes it evident that Mangione’s role is more about manipulating the public than his actions alone.
It all starts to sound like the plot of a Hollywood movie, like Star Wars, The Hunger Games, V for Vendetta, and The Matrix. They all portray the government as the enemy, convincing the audience that a “revolution” with violence is the only way. It’s no coincidence that these are the kinds of movies analyzed in school for their symbolism and anti hero themes. These ideas have been programmed into our subconscious from a young age, and now Mangione’s story seems to fit perfectly into that narrative, with his clever use of symbolism, using the #286 and use of the Monopoly money.Mangione’s story seems to fit perfectly into that narrative, with his clever use of symbolism, like the #286 and Monopoly money showing up on his social media.
