Society never existed. The individual is all there is. I don't believe in teams, nor do I believe in friendship. The human brain evolved to use other people as tools and we merely call this friendship. But I don't bother calling it that. There's no friends, just people to be used as tools. There's no teams, just "fair trades" of give and take of duties in exchange to recieve service from others. The tribe, the society, the team, the family is all merely a means to propel the individual to his goal. That's all it's ever been and I don't even bother deceiving myself into thinking it will ever be any other way, or can be any other way.

Everything is selfish at it's root and to be successful in this world, you will be selfish.

I feel legit sorry for you if you've never felt a feeling of goodwill towards someone whom you consider a close friend, and have actually thought of them as nothing more than someone to climb on for your own purposes.

Of course if you abstract that argument enough you can say that our brain does that to use people as "tools" - but the way it does that is by creating a bond / feeling that is real and genuine in its benevolence so your argument is pretty much circular.
