Look at the quality of life for the average 40something year old man: back pain, balding, bad knees, shit skin, fat, mediocre sexual stamina, limited fighting ability, deteriorating memory, not wanted by 90% of women except the gold diggers, etc.

Almost nobody truly fathoms just how much the human male lifespan has been increased artificially with modern medicine and technology. Even primitive tribes benefit from this to a degree, with younger men taking care of the tribal elders instead of just leaving them for dead. Yet despite this, they still only make it into their 60s most of the time.

The fact is, 40 is NOT middle aged, 40 is OLD.

You're 'adult' at 16, middle-aged at 26-30, and old at 40. Everything that comes after that is basically just the miracle of modern medicine and lack of external threats. Literally the majority of your life is an artificial waste of time for most men.

It's just many people died earlier or as infants, that's why "average age" of death was lower. People do live slightly longer now, but not drastically
