I use combined method (when needed) to make sure noticeable improvement is possible in hyoid position secondary to oral volume increase. a 5mm expansion down a 40mm long x 20mm high primary and secondary palate = 4cc of volume increase. This isn't extremely noticeable. For instance, 5mL of submittal liposuction isn't very noticeable.

Think of it this way: Deep plane neck lifts treat the soft tissue by removing a few CC of fat, a few CC or excessive digastric muscle, a few cc of salivary glands, and maybe a little skin + tightening the platysma. None of the removals alone make a huge difference, but combined the results are dramatic.

Same thing. Add lateral width (MARPE/Segmented LF1) and AP expansion (Bimax/Trimax) and the sum will be noticeable. One or the other might not be as transformative as you wish...

This is why 7-10mm (sometimes 12 or even more) of expansion is used when possible. There's lots of other little tricks like capturing the genioglossus with the chin osteotomy design, ramus widening, 5 piece mandible, etc. It's my job to balance all of these moving parts all inter connectedly effecting eachother.
