Some believe mewing works post-puberty, others say it only works if you start at 4 years old. I noticed that only a fraction of people actually see real results with it, and something always felt off. There’s literally no better natural mechanical signal to the maxilla than proper mewing not even the masseters have any direct impact on it.


After doing my research, I started seeing a clear pattern with every dude who tried mewing and got mediocre or zero results:


Tongue habits


If you started mewing at an older age and already have a narrow palate + any kind of malocclusion, you probably don’t even realize it, but you almost certainly have a tongue thrust or some other tongue dysfunction. This doesn’t just block your mewing progress it actively makes things worse. Tongue thrust is literally labeled the “anti-mewing pattern.”


It’s pretty easy to check if you have one:


1. Swallow water while keeping the tip of your tongue firmly behind your teeth.


2. Smile and swallow water.


3. Check for tongue tie.


Here’s the second big thing that completely fucks your swallow pattern and makes fixing the habit almost impossible:


Tongue tie


If you have a short/restricted tongue tie, your palate already doesn’t have enough space AND the tie is physically pulling your tongue downward the whole time. There are 4 classes of tongue tie (Class 4 being the worst).


You basically have two options:


• Softmaxing (coping): stretches + strengthening exercises


• Surgerymaxing: frenectomy + mandatory speech therapy (usually up to $800)


Even if you go the surgery route, you still need to softmax afterward. Every decent surgeon will tell you that if you skip the speech therapist, the tie will just re-form and you’ll have wasted your money.


After figuring all this out, I’m genuinely curious how many of you guys who tried mewing for a long time with basically zero results actually have this hidden tongue thrust/tongue tie issue and never knew about it?
