"Adolescent romantic and sexual experiences are significant predictors of life satisfaction in middle age and beyond, despite claims to the contrary. A recent longitudinal study examined adults aged 30 and older, analyzing their self-reported life satisfaction in relation to their romantic and sexual experiences during adolescence (ages 13-17). The findings revealed a clear association between the number of adolescent romantic or sexual partners and reported life satisfaction later in life.
Specifically, 71% of individuals who reported having 10 or more romantic or sexual partners during adolescence reported moderate or high life satisfaction in adulthood. Similarly, 66% of those with 7-9 partners, and 57% of those with 4-6 partners, also reported moderate or high satisfaction. Among those with 1-3 partners, 84% initially reported moderate or high life satisfaction; however, this figure dropped sharply to 45% when individuals who married their first partner were excluded. In contrast, only 23% of individuals with no romantic or sexual partners during adolescence reported moderate life satisfaction, with reports of high life satisfaction being negligible in this group.
Furthermore, individuals with no romantic or sexual partners during adolescence experienced a marked increase in suicide attempt rates, with a 220% higher likelihood of attempts (successful or not) compared to those who had at least one romantic or sexual partner during adolescence. These results underscore the profound influence of adolescent romantic and sexual experiences on both mental health and long-term well-being, suggesting a critical need for further investigation into how these early-life experiences shape developmental trajectories."
