Y-DNA is your paternal line, mtDNA is your maternal line. It goes back thousands of years, and tracks your ancestors’ location. Eventually, all Eurasian groups descend from mtDNA L3, which originated in East Africa. Based on this, scientists say we originated in Africa.
 
Y-DNA R1a and R1b is mostly common in Europe and South Asia, I is mostly common in Europe, E is mostly common in Africa, C is mostly common in East Asia, etc.

mtDNA H and U are mostly common in Europe, M is mostly common in Asia and L is mostly common in Africa.
