Look at the way it works in nature where there are no complex social systems that require men for economic or political reasons. Most of the males are usually either just killed by the alpha (e.g. lions) or they starve to death because they can't establish themselves properly, or they're eaten/driven away by the female if she's the bigger one in that species.
The uselessness of surplus males is especially evident in farming/agriculture, where the farmer usually only keeps the best males (e.g. the alphas) for breeding stock, and kills all the other ones instantly. Only the females are kept as actual cattle. And this goes for cows, chickens, pigs, etc.
The fact of the matter is, there is no evolutionary reason why a species needs a large number of males. The idea of having an equal number of men and women is an unnatural consequence of the complexities of human economy and social structures. If you are a man, and you are not the top 5-10% genetically fit, you're automatically a parasite on the species.
