INTRODUCTION
1. WHAT ARE MUSCLE INSERTIONS :-
a. In anatomy, every skeletal muscle has two main attachment points -- The origin which is fixed or less movable and closer to the center of the body. The secon main attachment point is the insertion the movable attachment point which is usually farther from the center.
b. When a muscle contracts, the insertion moves towards the origin and produces a movement at the joint. The length of the muscle belly depends on where it inserts and hugely influences body aesthetics, and muscle shape.
BICEPS AESTHETICS
2. PEAK VS LENGTH :-a. A higher muscle belly means more more dramatic peak but less overall mass potential
b. A lower muscle belly means more overall mass potential but less peak.
c. Ideal muscle insertion is low insertion with a long muscle belly extending closer to the elbow. This is ideal because it results in a fuller bicep appearance. But people with higher insertions can get that mountain look even if the bicep isn't that huge.
d. Can you guess Arnold's muscle insertions ? His are truly insane biceps
CALVES
a. High insertion calves are long and thin and harder to grow. Long thin muscles are harder to fill and this would be the most genetically determined thing in bodybuilding. There are few ways to outcompete a true calves monster like Mike Matarazzo shown in the above picture.
b. Ideal insertions are low insertions which provide a fuller calf appearance and is more responsive to trainig. These result in thick and full calves which are ideal for aesthetics.
LATS
4. WIDTH AND THE V-TAPER :-a. Low lat insertions create the V-taper Super Man look that looks ideal from both the front and back poses. It is ideal to have and is the source of the "anime back" memes that showcase gargantuan backs.
b.Higher insertions result in lats that flare out later and dont result in the cape look that is dramatic from both the front and back poses.
c. The man posted here is Serge Nubret. He has an ideal V-taper due to his size and ideal positioning of the lats. This muscle is extremely important to have to give the illusion of size even if you are not a mass monster. This is the make or break for aesthetics since it influences both the front and the back.
ABS
5. SYMMETRY AND DEPTH
a. Here insertion points and shape are more important than the size potential. Muscle segmentation is also crucial to achieve symmetry.
b. Shape and Symmetry are king and define the look. But like calves they are genetic. You will have to work around them if you dont have it.
c. Ideal insertions are even and symmetric insertions that contribute to an aesthetically pleasing look and are well defined. The given example is not a bodybuilder this time but his abs are still aesthetic. His name is Lazar Angelov
CHEST
a. This is another one of your make or break in terms of aesthetics in my humble opinion. If you have ideal chest insertions then with training you can build a stunner upper body, combined with lats. The ideal lats and chest combo can give size and the look if trained well. It is the ticket to looking like a Golden Era Classical contender.
b. Ideal insertions are symmetric without a gap between the pecs. This gap is mostly due to high insertions (I have it) that create the pec gap. Mike Tyson also has that gap so check him out if you would like to see some examples
c. Lower insertions produce a fuller chest and looks better with poses and in clothes. With the right size you can also fill out your shirts and T-shirts to look like that villian in the Spider Man comics (forgot his name). Arnold had perhaps the best chest genetics in his time unrivalled by all his contemporaries.
TRICEPS
7. THE HORSESHOE :-
a. The triceps like all other muscles are ideal when inserted low.
b. A low insertion allows for an overall fuller tricep. This enhances the arm's mass and comlements the bicep to make your arms look ginormous
c. The man in this photo Mark Ruhl is a mass monster but still he has the perfect example of what I mean when I say a "horseshoe" tricep. His tricep is so huge it actually gives shape and size to his arm contributing to a comic book look.
DELTS
8. ROUND DELTS :- a. Yeah, I know I tagged a roider once again, but take a look at his delts. What stands out from the other delts that you see around your average gym mass monster ? The shape and the definition
b. Delts have 3 heads - anterior, posterior and the lateral. The ideal insertion here yet again is a low muscle belly with a high point near the clavicle and scalpula and long muscle bellies down the arm bone.
c. This results in a round 3-D shoulders. A wide upper body from both the front and back. Also there should be a clear separation between the delts, arm and and chest especially when you are lean. This is automatics with leanness and good size
CAN YOU TRAIN AROUND BAD GENETICS ?
a. You cannot change your genetics with training so if you have poor genetics in any one of these you will have to get over it. Honestly, it's not even that of a big deal since a lot of well regarded bodybuilders didnt have top tier genetics in all areas yet still created aesthetic pysiques (Classical only not Open).
b. There are plenty of great guides in Best of The Best section for building size and mass. A good thumb of rule is that a bad muscle looks better when big than when small (common sense) so you can still train and have them thick, full and conditioned. Focus on dense-under-tension training and you will build mass with time.
c. You should put an emphasis on complementary muscles. For e.g. Small calves should be complemented with built hamstrings and quads to make your leg look fuller. Short lats should be complemented with built rear delts, teres major and upper back thickness to give an illusion of a wider back
d. Muscles with high insertions need more volume and frequency to catch up aesthetically. So your priority should be to train lagging body parts atleast 2x times a week using different rep ranges than normal
NOTE - YOU DON'T NEED TO BE A MASS MONSTER TO ACHIEVE AN IDEAL PHYSIQUE. WHILE THE EXAMPLES POSTED HERE ARE VERY LIKELY ON STEROIDS, YOU CAN STILL CREATE AN AESTHETIC PHYSIQUE NATURALLY IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TRAINING REGIMEN AND THE GENETICS.
