Im the creator of looksiq and we have implemented measures to ensure that the norms are accurate. We have integrated pictures from representative Datasets to calculate the actual mean and standard deviation for our sample. I hope that helps

The idea is rooted in the central limit theorem which states that the sum of independent votes tends towards a normal distribution regardless of the distribution of individual guesses. This means that individual bias (noise) gets cancelled out and you are only stuck with true variance. We use Item response theory to come up with your score. It models the relationship between a latent factor ( in this care attractiveness ) and the probability that a person wins against another person. Another person mentioned that scores fluctuate but that is to be expected when looking at the formula for the confidence interval. You divide the standard deviation by the root of N to calculate the standard error. That means as N (number of votes) increases the score becomes more static and is less likely to change but this takes some time. Our approach has nothing to do with ratios or any of that viciously circular stuff that you are used to seeing. Its a community project supposed to help people find out where they stand.
