I mean idk the details but I guess for the time yeah.
I think a big difference at the time was, that people have a problem with now, is to do with the idea of a power imbalance.
Since back then there was supposed to be a power imbalance between the husband and wife, so it was fine if he married a 12 year old.

power imbalance isn't inherently a bad thing. parents have power imbalances over their children.

the real problem is abuse, but to assume a 20yo man is going to abuse a 12yo girl is misandric

Yeah, but at the time this problem was solved because the community there wouldn't let him abuse his wife. There would be the man's mom living with them, the woman's family if they are still living. Also since at the time most of these people lived in the same local community (they were basically family) that would discourage a man from hurting his wife.

IMO that system wouldn't work in the current era with how local communities are now, but it worked for them in the past.
