What causes Nasiolabial folds?

My opinion at this stage is that there are two factors contributing to nasiolabial folds, the first one is a recessed maxilla. The second factor is bloated cheeks.

marked in red is the part that's the problem. That part of the cheek is bloated. I can press on it with my finger, and it feels different than fat, it feels like silicone, tbh. I can press it in for about 0.5 to 1cm until I feel bone. If the skin would lay directly on the bone with a minimal fat and muscle layer, I wouldn't have the nasiolabial folds.

Maybe those are muscles, that are overdeveloped from squinting?

(yes my lower jaw is recessed to the point where it would be classified as a deformity probably, but my maxilla, despite being narrow isn't too recessed)

In the following case, the cheeks are less protruding, leading to now possibility for nasiolabial folds. (except when squinting hard)

Bloated cheeks

here too, prominent cheeks seem to cause nasiolabial folds, what can be done about them?

• Paranasal Hypoplasia/Deep Canine Fossa

can you link that post?

so if you look in the first images, is that fat above the nasiolabial fold or muscle? would a liposuction be useful in the former case?

the borders of the muscle can't be changed I assume.

canine fossa is essentially the part of the maxilla that is exactly where the nasiolabial folds form, so ideal would be a forward grown maxilla, especially in that area.

Do you have a six-pack?

You should leanmaxx until your six-pack is visible before ruling out cheek fat. I have had a six-pack most of my life, interspersed with short periods of being chubby. When I am chubby (such as now) I've got visible nasiolabial folds. When I'm leaner, they're barely visible.

Thing is, if you've got bloated cheeks, for whatever reason, then smiles and facial expressions would fold your skin in the nasolabial region, so the "wrinkle" if you will, the line along the fold, gets deeper and more permanent. Some use fillers to prevent the line, but I wouldn't do that, at least not yet. I'm gonna leanmaxx and see if it disappears, the bloated cheeks and nasolabial folds.

I realized what the biggest factor for nasiolabial folds is most of the time. It is how @RealSurgerymax said, a recessed bone below the wrinkle/fold. This can occur from general recession/not enough forward growth of the maxilla, or okay forward growth and a narrrow upper jaw (which is the case for me I'd say).

Unfortunately true. I have recessed upper part of the maxilla and folds are there.
