I doubt it was actually that great. Germany was doing well in the 30s as they basically rebuilt the country and they did a really good job of it. But then when the war started almost every young man was forced to go fight in some dirty trench or jungle shithole and hope you didnt get your legs destroyed by a landmine or get malaria or dysentery from drinking swamp water. In germany it was a warzone as there were battles in just about every major city. The government was using all manpower for the war so you couldn't do much of anything because all the young men were elsewhere, and only old men and women were barely keeping things running. So you were either gonna fight in a hellhole or sit around a german city where nothing cool was happening and you were getting bombed every day and all you could eat was old bread and crackers.
