Long hair is a sign of fertility and a health indicator.
even in ancient Greece, long male hair was a symbol of wealth and power, while a shaven head was appropriate for a slave. The ancient Greeks had several gods and heroes who wore their hair long, including Zeus, Achilles, Apollo, and Poseidon. Greek soldiers are said to have worn their hair long in battle.
Even in the film "Troy" Brad Pitt have beautiful long hair.
tldr:
no hair=inferior slave, not worth for reproduction.
Long luscious hair=superior, sign of power and healthy genes.
more:
When Athens fell to the Spartans in the end of the Peloponnesian War, a puppet Government of Thirty Tyrants was established, to keep Athens in line with the conservative Sparta and her allies.
Skip now some years later. A man, wealthy enough to have a horse, called Theramenes, is being judged for his actions and way of life during the ruling of the Thirty Tyrants in Athens. Theramenes was wealthy, as mentioned, and belonged to the Oligarchic-leaning citizens of Athens. Whether he supported the Oligarchic Regime established by the Spartans, is debatable. Here in Greece, the conclusion of this trial and the innocence of the Accused are left to the students of High School.
One of the points for putting Theramenes on trial, was his long hair! Yes, his long hair. It was widely know in Ancient and Classical Greece, that Spartan Warriors had long hair, which they treated well, before each battle. On the contrary, Athenians favored the clean-shaven head for the Military and young children. It was more healthy, you see.
He was put for trial, because other citizens believed he had long hair, because of his favour for an Oligarchic Athens. He copied, in a way, the Spartan way of life in the center of the former Delian League, Athens. Of course, this was the weakest of all accusations put against Theramenes, as he claimed the personal grooming of a man, does not represent his ideals or political opinions.
Apart from that, long hair in ancient Greece was seen as a sign of power and an ability to keep yourself clean and healthy, even in difficult times. Spartans groomed themselves even before battle. Long hair stayed as a tradition among people that had Dorian ancestry. Athenians and later Macedonians favoured a short hair approach
