It was useful to an extent I would say up until maybe the early 90s or so but once women were all working and the internet sites popped up after that it made those guys mostly obsolete as far as actually marrying them etc. They will still use those guys while screwing the better looking guys if they are dumb enough to give their money up that easy however.
