CHINESE LEG BINDING TUTORIAL

- Preparation: The feet would be soaked in a warm mixture of herbs and animal blood to soften the foot and aid in the process of breaking the bones.
- Breaking the Toes: After soaking, the toes (except the big toe) are forcibly curled underneath the sole of the foot. This can often breake the bones. The big toe is left unbound to help maintain balance.
- Binding: Long, narrow strips of cloth are used for binding. These are ten feet long and two inches wide. The bindings are wrapped in a figure-eight pattern: starting at the instep, wrapping over the toes, under the foot, and around the heel. This pattern compres the foot into a smaller shape.
- Tightening: The bindings are tighten each day or every few days. The aim is to force the arch of the foot to break and fold in half, creating what is known as the "golden lotus" foot shape.
- Maintenance: This process requires continual maintenance. Bindings are removed, the feet were washed and massaged to increase circulation, and then re-bound tighter than before. This process will continue for several years until the feet permanently held their shape.
- Daily Upkeep: Someone with bound feet would typically continue to bind their feet even in adulthood to maintain the small size, and they would suffer from pain and mobility issues throughout their lives.
