It literally doesn't matter how kind or nice you are to people. The very moment you become an obstacle in their way or your interests are no longer aligned with theirs they will turn on you. At worst all your nice behavior will start to be seen as an entitlement and they will actually get angry if you stop doing it, meaning that by being nice you may actually end up screwing yourself over by accident.

Don't do anything for other people. Just milk them for what they are worth and move on.
