You are often seen as a narcissist, vain and arrogant when you work on yourself, but it's the opposite:
I'm sure you know the people who cope with "I don't want to change for others, I stay the way I am, I am me, why should i change, i am a real person". But that is exactly a sign of arrogance and narcissism, one is sufficient and the other people should adapt and change, not yourself.
Working on yourself almost always has the goal of being better off socially and having a better standing among your fellow human beings, that's actually an honorable thing, because we humans are social creatures. To give a shit about it is arrogant and narcissistic.
