I think this is a element of sociopathy. Some people desire who you are, how you think, or how you look etc. and project themselves on to you. What they would do if they were you etc.

This is not inherently bad as many of us have imaginative simulating capabilities and have done this, but the sociopath cannot distinct between fiction and reality. Maybe its a lack of self or perception of lack of self- Perhaps they lack that spacial awareness ability so they feel inadequate and thus cannot empathy with you. So they NEED you to conform, since they cannot be you and conform on their own.

But this is a complex question as this may not always be the case. Also, they are a lot of common family dynamics that involve this sociopathy.

But i do think most people do not do things to help other people. This habit ultimately requires a great sacrifice and many do not train this element at all. You will know if a person is such and they tend to operate very differently. They are very few people who constantly sacrifice themselves selflessly for no profit or acknowledgement from anybody. That at least tells you something about the cause of the behavior.
