they had to go to the caucasus because they were running out of oil (and they did in 44-45, even before that they couldn't use their machinery to the fullest) Push to the moscow then would just cause a soviet retreat, russia is very big so germans would run out of oil and USSR could just keep figthing.

Actually the generals were pushing for the full attack on Moscow, Hitler wanted to go for the oil because the generals only thought about it militraly while hitler considered the condition of germany as a whole. In the end they ended up doing it 50/50 and they couldn't get enough oil.

Only chance to win was a huge push for the caucasus, which would also allow them to have more mobilised panzer divisions, and maybe getting japan to attack too (but Japanese felt betrayed because of germany allying with soviets in 39)
