Long story short, had an Orthodontics appointment today (for overbite issue).

The doctor wants to expand my palate and then use regular braces + "bite plate". Is this a legit plan? Wouldn't braces + "bite plate" retrude my bones? In that case should I "agree" to this treatment and then just stop going to the doc after my palate expansion is complete (as palate expander is the only legit appliance I am aware of)?

how old are you? damn it I want pallate expander too

22. It seems like it's not that difficult to get pallate expander if you go to the right doc

u need palate expander and braces bruv. u can probably get away with just expanding if ur teeth dont start looking too spaced out and missaligned

That's pretty much exactly what I had done to me when I got my braces. Expander to widen front teeth to reduce crowding, braces to straighten, and I'm guessing the "bite plate" is so that you're front teeth touch first before your molars do, forcing your teeth upward until the touch each other again, I had that as well.

Went really well for me, just be sure to get a second opinion if your orthodontist wants to extract teeth, be sure to get wisdom teeth removed if you don't have enough space, and get a permanent retainer / always wear your retainer. In case you don't know, you have to wear your retainer for life, although after a couple years it pretty much tapers off to once a week at night.

EDIT: This is what a bite plate does. Although in my case all my orthodontist did was put two pieces of dental cement behind my front teeth, then removed them once I had my braces taken off.

Thanks boyo. I already booked appointment for a second opinion. I don't have wisdom teeth anyway, so there should be enough space.

How old were you when u got this treatment? Have you noticed any facial structure changes after the treatment? Idk maybe this whole "braces will ruin your face" thing is exaggerated, but I just wanna be safe tbh

The only way to properly expand your palate at you're age is the Maxillary Skeletal Expander

I started at around 14 and finished at 17.5~. From around eighth grade to Junior year in high school. Only took that long because I missed so many appointments and didn't wear my rubber bands enough.

In regards to facial structure, honestly, I was and still am pretty fat, so I couldn't ever really notice a difference, although I think my chin may have gotten ever so slightly stronger because of the bite palate, if you watch the video it basically moves your jaw downward slightly, although this is complete conjecture because I can't be sure if it actually happened or it's just a placebo that I want to believe.

About the "ruined face", yes, it's a complete exaggeration. I can guarantee you that your face will either stay exactly the same or improve almost imperceptibly.

These orthodontists spend the better part of their adult years studying this shit, and are risking their livelihood if they fuck your face up. They should also be taking X-rays of not only your teeth but of your entire skull (mine did) so you can ask them to send them somewhere else for a second opinion or request copies if you're still a little worried.

I was mistaken in the first post, now I've read it is dental arch expander, not palate expander.

If you were in puberty during the treatment, it would be difficult to judge the impact of this treatment on your facial structure anyway (you wouldn't know if changes were from natural development or caused by appliances). Anyway it seems like there is not much to be worried about.

Google returns the same images for me, regardless this is what I had. It kind of hurt to turn and food always got stuck in between it and the roof of my mouth, but I only had to have it on for around a month and a half. You won't see a difference at all, then one day you'll wake up with a dime sized gap between your two front teeth.

True. I could probably even argue that it's even more impressive because of how volatile bone and teeth shifting was that he didn't fuck anything up.

Just for reference I had four extractions, and my orthodontists lined everything up perfectly, didn't pull a Tom Cruise or anything, didn't fuck with my jaw at all.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed (2 of them were really messed up and literally sideways) and two other teeth because I was very crowded, and I was probably at least 22 or older when I did all that, then I got my braces off in 2016 and I'm 28 now, so this probably didn't have any effect on my face? My teeth and everything look great, I can't tell if my palate is small, I have a little trouble mewing but it got a bit better, and looking in the mirror it at least looks normal, my ortho used a "palatal archbar" which I assume is some kind of expander so I'm guessing he planned for any facial changes and stuff. When I got my braces off I was 99% happy with my looks and didn't notice any kind of recession or anything like that, but I'm wondering if my face could change in a few years after that? I'm obsessing over this now. I recently gained a bunch of weight and my BF changed for the worse so I'm attributing my recent changes to that (I'll make a separate thread of that soon). I saw the x-rays he took after I got my braces off and at first glance my skull looked pretty great but I didn't take a long look. My ortho was a "maxillofacial specialist" so that tells me he would have made sure nothing went wrong with my maxilla...lol

It seems like as long as you don't do any teeth extractions or use some appliances that pushes back, then you are only going to see positive differences (if any)

Thanks

Well I don't know if the 4 wisdom teeth I had pulled count but I had two teeth extracted on the top, and I doubt everything got pushed back seems like he would have thought of that so I don't know, anyway I didn't notice any changes until recently, and I think it's weight/bf related but I'm paranoid now.
