Palate expanding with retainer

I found my old palate expander from when i was a kid, i sanded it down and cut it so now it fits, been trying for a few hours and i can feel it working, however my dentist is making me wear a wire retainer on my 4 front teeth so they wont move and stay in place after he removed the braces. does the palate expander still work on my palate? will it deal any damage on my teeth placement?
