Hey,you've likely heard the story of Lucifer The Fallen Angel.
According to Christian legend,Lucifer was the most senior and beautiful angel in Gods Heavenly court .
He wanted to be more powerful than God and rebelled along fellow angels he corrupted into following his plans.
After ensuring heavenly war,Lucifer and his fellow companions were banished from heaven and sent all the way down to hell.
Lucifer now a Fallen Angel
became the Devil,and his fellow
Angels became demons.
Okay,with me so Far? Good.
The story you just heard is NOT in the Bible, well atleast not in the way its often told the real origin of Lucifer is a lot more interesting,it's one of misinformation, conflation and one very curious mistranslation.
Before we get into the wars in heaven and the fallen angels and hell fire lets start with his name.
Lucifer
It's just one of many names used for the devil like Satan,The beast,Devil and beelzebub and those names are used quite a lot in the Bible but only once is the name Lucifer ever mentioned in the Bible and that's in the old testament book of Isaiah
Isaiah 14:12
"How you are fallen from heaven,O lucifer,Son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground,You who wanted the nations"
(Kjv)
This taunting remark is directed towards the arrogant king of Babylon, who's kingdom had just fallen Isaiah is basically teasing it for him.
Why did Isaiah call him Lucifer?what does Satan have to with any of this?
Well you could argue Lucifer was ungraciously casted out of heaven to hell,so making the comparison between the two is a pretty good one,but if you examine the text in it's original language(Biblical Hebrew)it's actually
Do you see anywhere in this text "Lucifer"?Instead of Lucifer The king of Babylon is called Hêlēl ben Šāḥar.
Meaning "shining one,Son of morning"
In Hebrew the shining one doesn't refer to Satan or the devil but the planet Venus
Besides the moon venus is the brightest body in the night sky, because it's so bright it's the first star you can see in the morning and the last star you can see when the sun comes up hence the name "the morning star" or in Hebrew "The shining one,Son of morning"
Hêlēl ben Šāḥar
And it all begins to make sense as describing the king of Babylon to Venus,Isaiah is likely mimicking his fall from grace to the morning star(Venus)which every morning seems to fall to the sky into the underworld.
We've established Isaiah is talking about the movements of the morning star venus, but how on earth did it become Lucifer?well once the Bible was translated by early Christians in Latin they came across Isaiah 14:12 and translated the Hebrew word for morning star into their own language.
Lucifer is the Latin word for morning star.
>That is all for now I don't know how many parts there will be but i will definitely be dropping more threads like this in the near future
