Like he knew always he is ugly, but at the same time he knew that if he provides value to better looking guys, he might achieve something. He did not achieve anything that is meaningful. He was in the lower third of the status hierarchy just like how he started out. I definitely thought him as smart and even somewhat asexual. Who doesnt concern himself about girls but js study etc. I feel like he didnt want to achieve things, just do as much damage as he could. Did he succeed in that part? Yh, he did some damage.
