Penis envy" is a term introduced by Sigmund Freud in his psychoanalytic theory, specifically in his discussion of female psychosexual development. According to Freud, penis envy refers to a stage during a girl's early development when she realizes she doesn't have a penis and experiences feelings of inferiority or jealousy. Freud suggested that this realization leads to a sense of inadequacy, and the girl may wish to have a penis as a symbol of power and social status.
Freud's concept has been widely criticized, especially for its gender biases and its overemphasis on sexual anatomy as central to psychological development.
