Penis envy" is a term introduced by Sigmund Freud in his psychoanalytic theory, specifically in his discussion of female psychosexual development. According to Freud, penis envy refers to a stage during a girl's early development when she realizes she doesn't have a penis and experiences feelings of inferiority or jealousy. Freud suggested that this realization leads to a sense of inadequacy, and the girl may wish to have a penis as a symbol of power and social status.
Freud's concept has been widely criticized, especially for its gender biases and its overemphasis on sexual anatomy as central to psychological development. Many modern psychologists and feminists argue that Freud's theories are outdated and reflect the cultural and gender norms of his time. Instead of seeing penis envy as a universal or inevitable part of female development, many contemporary thinkers emphasize how gender identity and self-worth are shaped by a range of social, psychological, and cultural factors, not just anatomical differences.
In contemporary discussions, the term may also be used more loosely to describe a sense of competition, inferiority, or envy that some women or individuals may feel in male-dominated societies, though this is not aligned with Freud's original framework
