The Soviet Union was (for the lack of a better term) more 'casteist' than the modern day USA with essentially hereditary restrictions on education, work, freedom of movement within the republics themselves, etc.
What came after arose from the shadow economy and the demarcations inherent to, already existing within and outside the system. Russia fared worse than most with Putin being an explicitly caudilloist interface promising more pain for the natives–a country faker than "Venezuela"–the scale of state repression has already surpassed that of the Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras.
These people don't believe in "shared futures," they want to fuck over the next guy, fuck over you and make you pay for it. What they saw all their lives was cruelty and what they believe is nothing.
