Once your basic material needs are met, the only thing that will make you happy is being connected to other people, not accumulating more possessions. Spending time with family, friends and lover(s) makes life rich and fulfilling. That's why some of the happiest people I've met have been in poor countries, places like Nepal and the Philippines, where there are strong social bonds.
I'm currently the wealthiest I've ever been in my life, by far, yet I'm also the most miserable. When I was a penniless teen, begging my parents for meager handouts, I was excited about living because I had a social network of friends and relatives with whom I regularly shared experiences with. I can only imagine how much better it would have been had I also had women in my life.
There is no substitute for other people. When you're socially isolated, nothing you do can alleviate your feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction with life. So, no matter how many hobbies you have, how many walks you take, how many shopping binges you go on, or how many cheeseburgers and pizzas you stuff your face with, nothing can ever replace the company of human beings.
