Context: There was a tribe alongside the Aztecs known as the Culhua.

The story goes that in the 14th century, the Aztecs approached the Culhua chieftain asking if they could have his daughter as the wife of Huitzilopichtli, their patron god, and treat her as their "sovereign."

The chieftain thought this was a good idea since the two tribes were having cordial relations with each other, so he sent them his daughter.

He did not know that becoming this god's "wife" meant they would sacrifice the girl, flay her skin, and then have a priest wear it.

When the chieftain went to attend the festivities, he recognized the priest was wearing his daughter, and so the Culhua took arms and drove the Aztecs out.
