Methods for expanding the palate and facial width on this forum are generally boiled down to MSE but there are two main issues.

1. MSE does not provide the natural growth in the BACK of the palate that we want. Instead it widens the front and back equally leading to expansion, but can end up looking uncanny.
2. MSE cost money

As an alternative, methods such as thumbpulling were introduced, a diy poor man's mse if you will. The general issues with thumbpulling are that:

1. No consistent force keeping the gap created open
2. Who wants to thumbpull every hour of the day

Thus after thumbpulling there was plier pulling. A method which is capable of exerting more force and is easier to do. The usage of a plier with a locking mechanism would allow for longer durations of pulling without fatigue.

But again, I'm not sure if just doing it for 30 or so minutes a day would yield any permanent results.

So why not introduce an orthodontic appliance such as a schwartz expander?

The main idea is that you first plier pull with a locking plier and hold it there, then once a temporary gap has been creating, use the much more comfortable expander to hold the gap throughout the rest of the day. Then the next day, do the same thing over again. Remove the expander, widen the gap further, widen the expander to fit the slightly larger gap and shove it in.

I just started uni so I am unable to put this to the test at the moment, but I already have an expander from before, all I need is to get a pair of pliers and cloth.

TLDR: plier pulling and then using an expander to fill the gap could lead to a better solution for facial width

If you need wider pallet go for it, but it will not shift the maxilla laterally up.

Most people (including what I do) should use thumb pulling to fix a dorsal hump or downward growth.

Ik thumb pulling is a meme now because of autists who follow anything to get attention but it does work.
