What would change if the World Cup and euros changed places starting in the 1970’s?

I’ll list it out new time line

- 1970 euros
- 1972 World Cup
- 1974 euros
- 1976 World Cup
- 1978 euros
- 1980 World Cup
- 1982 euros
- 1984 World Cup
- 1986 euros
- 1988 World Cup
- 1990 euros
- 1992 World Cup
- 1994 euros
- 1996 World Cup
- 1998 euros
- 2000 World Cup
- 2002 euros
- 2004 World Cup
- 2006 euros
- 2008 World Cup
- 2010 euros
- 2012 World Cup
- 2014 euros
- 2016 World Cup
- 2018 euros
- 2020 World Cup

What would change in this timeline? Would spain 2008-12 get 2 world cups and 1 euro instead of 2 euros and 1 World Cup?

Would the late 1990’s to early 2000’s French golden generation still win a World Cup?

Would Portugal make a deep run into the 2016 World Cup in this timeline Just like how they made a deep run into the 2016 euros?

The most important question I would like to discuss is if messi would win a World Cup in 2012 after his 73 goal season with Barcelona. What do you guys think? Tagging ppl who might have interest

I think World Cup final 2004 would be Czech Republic vs Portugal.

It could of also been Czech Republic vs Netherlands. I don’t think South American teams would do anything in this World Cup, as Brazil was old and fatigued by 2004. Argentina were irrelevant.

Germany were in trouble and launched a program to produce more talent for the 2006-2014 cycle around this time and probably wouldn’t of made a deep run.

Greece would maybe get a quarter final run but inevitably get dumped out by a better team.

Italy would make final 4.

Personally, I think:

Brazil win the WC in 1996 instead of Germany
France would still win the 1998 euros
France would also go on to win the 2000 WC
Germany would win the 2002 euros
Brazil/Portugal would win the 2004 WC (Greece definitely won't win ofc)
Italy would probably win the 2006 euros, as they did with the WC that year. Can only see France or Germany stopping them, potentially.
Spain would still win the 2008 world cup + 2010 euros, for sure.
Germany would still win the 2014 euros
Portugal/France would win the 2016 WC (same final)
France would still win the 2018 euros

I agree with most of what you said.

but I don’t see Brazil making the 2004 final tbqh. Rivaldo by that point wouldn’t even be on the team. Cafu was too old. Roberto Carlos was aging.

what do you think of the 2012 World Cup?

That's true, I suppose. It was evident that their 2002 WC-winning squad had definitely aged a fair bit, 4 years later, at the 2006 WC where the European teams out-performed them.

Maybe it would have been a different story in 2004 (Dida 31, Cafu 34, Roberto Carlos 31, Lucio 26, Gilberto 28, Ronaldinho 24, Ronaldo 28, Kaka 22 etc.) most would still be close to their primes.
But maybe I'm wrong and Brazil wouldn't be able to get things done at the 2004 WC.
It was a weird year anyway, Germany, France and Italy were also poor back then.

Just realized I forgot about 2012 lol, Spain take that one easily imo.

2012 final is spain vs Argentina imo

Spain obviously makes the final ofc.

I’m putting Argentina in the final because messi that year broke the scoring record for total goals in a season (73 I think). He would probably get 6-7 goals in that tournament if his form continued. Argentina 2012 had a decent midfield and attack to supply him too

I think Messi would bottle it as per for Argentina, similarly to the 2014 WC final.

Most definitely. His midfield and attack support would be cut off by Spain’s Tiki taka playstyle which was in its prime around this time. He may get a goal but spain will get 2-4 and call it a day. 2 world cups in a row and undisputedly the best international team in history.

the difference that tournament placement could make is huge
