I’ve seen so many clueless debates about politics on this forum and the internet generally, especially from fat, sweaty, type-2 diabetic Americans. Below are some brief outlines of often misused terms based on my semi-decent understanding
Economics
Capitalism: private ownership of the means of production. Production driven by pursuit of profit
Socialism: social ownership of the means of production. Production driven by needs of society
Social democracy: common form of socialism in the West since WWII. economic democracy (eg trade unionism, nationalised industry, cooperatives) plus state intervention to promote social justice (eg welfare state, progressive taxation, universal healthcare)
Communism: another ideology within socialism yet to be realised in any meaningful way. Classless, stateless society like that of prehistory
Politics
Liberalism: essentially the political manifestation of Enlightenment thought and the foundation of all Western societies
Progressivism: opposite of conservatism. Seeks to reform or replace institutions. Innovation
Conservatism: opposite of progressivism (NOT of liberalism). Seeks to preserve institutions and defend the status quo. Tradition
Other
Marxism: predominantly a materialist theory of a human history defined by struggle between social classes culminating in communism. Not part of socialism (socialism pre-dates it) but can be complementary
Marxism–Leninism: the official state ideology of the so-called ‘communist countries’. Builds on Marxism by developing a revolutionary strategy to enact Marx’s theories, unfortunately leading to dictatorship and totalitarianism in most cases
Identity politics/SJWs: progressivism gone completely mad to the detriment of actual progress. Unrelated to liberalism despite proponents often being referred to as liberals
