In the US I’d guess blacks are seen as default along with whites as both have been around for centuries, ethnic is a buzzword for newcomer swarthy caucasians (arabs, indians, mexicans etc)

in Europe white is the default so everyone else is seen as ethnic but similarly its mostly used for swarthy caucasians

I doubt a spaniard would be mistaken for an arab but americans do have an obsession with race that comes off really weird for people in the old world. We use nationality as our primary identity

I had ancestors who left Europe for America in the beginning of the 20th century and during that time Slavs, Romanians, Italians, Greeks and other Eastern Europeans weren’t seen as white
