What sort of general work do I need to do and what sort of scans to collect ? I live a drive away from a guy that does extreme advancements (but he is not who'd wanna go with). I can go to him to get some of that work done I guess.

1. Get your dental health in order: no bleeding gums, no rotting teeth, get a OPG scan to be absolutely sure.
2. Find an orthodontist who will work with a surgeon of your choice (near impossible ime) - unless 100% clear braces won’t be needed.
3. Get CT scan of your whole face (you will probably need a referral, difficulty varies based on country)
