Maintaining a Proper 24:7 Lip Seal
Mewing is based on a simple premise: lips together, teeth together, tongue on the roof of your mouth. Essentially using good oral posture to guide good growth, influencing the balance of facial structure.
Maintaining a lip seal is an important element in this. Many people have trouble keeping a sub-conscious lip seal 24/7. When you wake up, check if your mouth is dry, check if your jaw muscles hurt, and even if you woke up with your mouth open (and if you didn’t you still could’ve been mouth breathing.) For most people, the distance between the tip of their nose and the tip of their chin is a bit too long, because the face has down swung. The lips must stretch very far to meet, to compensate, many people bring other muscle groups to bring their lips together. This is usually the mentalis (chin muscle) which will roll the soft tissue of the chin up and around to raise the lower lip, damaging the form of the chin tip.
Recruiting additional muscles to help a lip seal is not a good thing, you need to be doing it sub-consciously.
The best thing to do is remind yourself frequently, or lip-taping/mouth-taping, to physically hold your lips together (whilst sleeping, or even during the day if you have trouble), now once you can have a lip seal WITH the tape, slowly remove the intensity of the tape, or amount of the tape (over a span of a few months) until you can completely hold a lip seal 100% sub-consciously.
I recommend any 3mm micropore tape that has a good stick and can bring your lower lip to your upper lip with a suction mechanism.
Remember: Achieving a lip seal can be harder whilst sleeping on your back, try sleeping on your side (OR even on your stomach, although this is not optimal because it can make your back sore. But it’s worse to have no lip seal and sleep on your back than have a lip seal and be sleeping on your stomach.)
