Proof that low contrast, at least between the lips and the rest of the face, is more sexually attractive in men?

Some people here think facial contrast is unattractive in men and attractive in women, while others believe that it’s attractive in both genders. This study could have many flaws but it’s interesting. 200 participans rated men wearing makeup, having their lips contrasting less to the skin, as more attractive on average. Obviously the skin tone being even and the makeup improving the under eye area for example could influence that a lot, more so than facial contrast, so it’s not really evidence of low contrast being more attractive ( by itself ). Nonetheless it’s interesting.

No idea, regular makeup?

Yes, in that case I mean redder lips. Eyebrows and eyelashes are other features that could contrast the skin and it’s well known that darker eyebrows are more attractive in men but I’m not sure if because of contrast itself.

I use makeup and the difference is night & day. No matter how perfect someone’s skin routine is, you simply cannot compete with a thoughtfully applied makeup stack

Thankfully 99% of guys are high inhib as fuck to ever try it

That's interesting. I always thought that redder lips with higher contrast were better.

The study doesn't necessarily say that low contrast improved anyone's looks. It says that there were a number of changes they made with makeup, one of them being decreased contrast, and that the faces with makeup were rated higher. We don't know if the low contrast itself improved the perceptions of the men's faces.

From the study:

"The professional makeup artist applied a range of cosmetics on the participants. For instance, concealer, powder, etc. The professional makeup artist was instructed to increase skin homogeneity, decrease facial contrast, and accentuate the bone structure without it being too obvious that the targets were wearing makeup."

The researchers just used "low contrast" as an idea because they read that in another study. Also:

"While the difference between men with and without makeup was statistically significant, the effect size was small. This is in contrast with the research done with female faces which has found a large effect of makeup on attractiveness (e.g., η2 = 0.33 [22])."

Yes and I actually made a thread about this topic that goes in way more detail a while back

Thanks for elaborating on why this doesn’t necessarily mean that lower facial contrast is more attractive. I know it wasn’t the aim of the study, it was just something I was interested in and extrapolated it.

If anything it still gives a hint that facial contrast, at least as far as the lips goes, is much less important in men than it is in women.

The first pictures from the left are without any makeup, while these on the right are with makeup, so you got it the other way around

I’m not even sure anymore, I was thinking the same at first. Whatever appeals to the female gaze. But like someone else said the study is flawed in that regard as it wasn’t even meant to prove that paler lips are more attractive. Interesting to see more people believe the opposite
