Propanolol is amazing.
Here are some things that people tend to not realize Propanolol also does
1. It IS cardioprotective. Meaning whatever you use (caffeine, stimulants, etc), it can reduce cardiac load. It does NOT prevent cardiotoxicity.
2. Reduces physical withdrawal symptoms Many people use drugs that heavily reduce excitatory transmitters, such as baclofen, pregabalin, phenibut, alcohol, etc. These are highly habit forming. These drugs do have withdrawal symptoms. Because Propanolol reduces both Beta 1 and Beta 2 receptor activity, it serves as a great tool to help with the physical symptoms of withdrawal.
3. It can greatly help with past traumatic events
Because Propanolol reduces B1 and B2 receptor signaling, it inhibits the physical sides of emotion.
If we are able to replay an tramautic memory, that causes lots of emotional distress, you will not be as surprised. Perhaps your heart won’t beat as fast. Your palms won’t become sweaty. You feel a bit calmer. The more this is repeated, the weaker the traumatic event becomes. The severity of the event is going to greatly impact this process. Because noradrenaline is downregulated, it temporarily turns down the “fight or flight” symptoms of (x) traumatic event. The more this memory is reconsolidated, your brain learns that (x) environment is safe.
Propanolol does follow a logarithmic curve, capping out around 40-60 milligrams.
SUMMARY: Propanolol has many hidden benefits that go much more beyond reducing physical symptoms of anxiety
- Blocks physical symptoms of anxiety
- Reduces blood pressure
- Helps you do better in high stakes scenarios (job interviews, dates, etc)
