Also, to anyone wondering what I meant,
from 1957 following Roth v. United States when porn was relegalized up until the mid-1960s, you could buy catalogs, 8mm films and special photo sets at very high prices at certain sex shops in major cities. It wasn't advertised so you would have to call or write them directly for them to send it to you via mail. Initially, the child porn trade was clandestine in production whose publication was largely the pursuit of amateurs, making it a fringe activity and most certainly peripheral to the emerging trade in pornography. But then in 1966, sex shops started selling pseudo child pornography in an over the counter fashion. These magazines in question were sold under various lies about it's content, ranging from medical themes, lifestyle themes, art themes, etc. One such example was called "Phallic Development In The Pubescent Male" which contained nude photos of young boys with inaccurate captions (like calling a 12 year old 5 or 7, for example).

Then in 1969 after Denmark legalized porn, Willy Strauss, along with brothers Jens and Peter Theander of Color Climax, got together to turn it into a large industry, grossing millions upon millions of dollars in profit. Some magazines had even requested material from the reader along with a financial incentive. Because while possession and distribution was legal, production never was due to age of consent laws.

Eventually in 1976, Robin Lloyd of NBC published "For Money Or Love: Boy Prostitutes In America" which caught the attention of Judianne Densen-Gerber of the Odyssey house drug treatment program who utilized the publication to shape public opinion on it and to campaign for it's ban, with 60 Minutes and the New York Times running stories. Eventually, House Democrats Dale E. Kildee of Michigan and John M. Murphy of New York banned it under their state obscenity laws. In February 1978, the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation Act of 1977 was passed by Congress, banning it nationwide. It set the age limit to 16 and was lax enforced, allowing it to still be publicly traded albeit on a smaller scale. Eventually, it disappeared from the shelves of porn bookstores after the Child Protection Act of 1984, which saw more arrests within the first few weeks of it's passage than the 1978 law did in it's entirety. This time the age limit was set to 18. Pretty soon, even the possession was outlawed in 1990 with Osborne v. Ohio and the Child Protection Restoration and Penalties Enhancement Act of 1990.

In Colonial America there was no laws regulating obscenity and it was thought to be none of the state's business. You could buy books like Boccaccio's Decameron, Venus In The Cloister, The Politick Whore and Letters of an Italian Nun and an English Gentleman. The first obscenity laws weren't passed until 1815 in Pennsylvania, and from then until the 1860s, it was only regulated on a state level. It was only banned federally until 1873 with the what later became known as the Comstock Act under Ulysses Grant. Child pornography and erotica has existed as long as camera technology has. Way before any photo magazine existed, just pictures the size of postcards were circulating in the 19th century. Before you had illustrated books and (like with the photos) single illustrations the size of a postcard.
