I have long arms and my selfies are all extremely distorted unless taken at 6m distance or more. At half arms length my fWHR drops to 1.4, at arm's length it's 1.65, at 6m or more it's about 1.85

The closer someone gets to your face IRL, your FWHR is going to appear smaller to them too, so the difference isn't entirely down to camera lens, it's true to reality to some extent.

Actually this is not true because of two things:

1) Your eye's lens is wider than your camera's lens.
2) Your brain produces a 3D image from 2 images that are from 2 different angles, because of this lens distortion effect is better with the eyes than with the camera.

So overall the effects would be much weaker IRL than on camera.

It's pretty crazy how big the difference is, obviously use narrow lenses for making dick pictures and wide lenses for portraits.

Also I think some cameras have better distortion than others, I am sure my shitty Chinese Huawei has god awful distortion as I said before my fWHR drops from 1.9-1.85 to 1.62 at full arm distance, even worse if it's half arm distance(like 1.3 fWHR).

Meanwhile I've compared some professional Instagram selfies vs long-shots and there was only about 8% fWHR loss, compared to mine 13-16%.
