track and control values.

values are basically the level of lightness/darkness of something.

so the darkest black would have a value of 10

and the lightest light would have a value of 1

on traditional pencil and paper you control values with how much pressure you put on the pencil


so middle values are called mid tones,

the darkest values are called shadows,

the lighter values are called halftones

and the lightest values are highlights

working from observation you can see the lightness darkness of something by squinting

you can play around with lighting situations by controlling the values.
