Could not evolution just make us fully monogamous like birds? to prevent all the family conflicts, problems, cheatings, etc.
Reason is simple, polygyny offers better reproductive success. For instance: if male died in hunting back than, and female stayed single for her whole life it would not benefit tribe, firstly because there is no offspring, and even if there is offspring human baby needs both parents as they are growing slowly and are highly dependent.
But we are not fully polygamous either, reasons are simple, 1.one man could not provide for lots of children, because as i said it needs more care. 2.More tension in tribes, not optimal for stability.
so unique system developed, where historically high status man could get and usually had lots of wives. Reason why high status man had more wives i think are obvious but am gonna say it anyway: 1.they can provide for children, 2. other men cant really go against him if status difference is too high.
In modern world (in west) high status man dont have more wives because of social norms (pushed by low status men to ensure passing their genes) rather they have more whores, bitches, prostitutes, etc. so taking other man's wife/girlfriend happens till this day, this reminds me when clav took someones GF
