Being Jewish is passed down through the mother. If your mom's Jewish, you're in, no questions asked. This goes way back to ancient times when it was easier to be sure who the mother was, so they kept it simple and stuck with that. It also helped keep the community tight, when times were tough, like during persecution or forced assimilation. Now if either parent is Jewish and you’re raised Jewish, you’re Jewish.
It's perfect for hypergamy. Women can pick a partner with the best genes, and their kids will still be Jewish no matter who the dad is. Look how cunning it is.
