It is hard to define.
That being said, I think most people these days don't have souls. They're completely empty inside and act like biological robots, loaded with a set of programmed responses like an NPC in a video game.

If I remember correctly, a study once showed that many people have no internal monologue. When they were told that other people do have an internal monologue, they were shocked.
A person with no internal monologue is literally a biological robot.
