Average human has existential turmoil following first time they kill that sticks with them until the day they die. Here's an example: during world war 1 the fear of bayonetting someone was just as terrifying as the fear of being bayonetted to the point where soldiers on both sides engaged in a behavior of wildly shooting at each other from 10 feet away rather than resort to using their bayonet.
