in hunter gatherer tribes there is large incentive for cooperative group hunting between men and it is difficult for individual man to consistently provide enough calories for large family in many environments, let alone for multiple wives/children/etc.
incentive for cooperation creates negative incentive for men to take internaecine competition to the level where significant population of men are excluded from reproductive access
if you needed more women you would trade with other tribes with complimentary population imbalances or you would raid and take women from other tribes but this was relatively rare tbh

agriculture allowed small minority of men who accumulated capital and surplus to exploit masses of poorly nourishes grain eaters and keep harem of wives, many children, etc
