The use of erythropoietin (EPO) outside of medical supervision, especially in bodybuilders and athletes, carries significant risks and side effects. Here are some of the key dangers:

### 1. **Blood Clots (Thrombosis)**
- **Increased Red Blood Cell Count:** EPO raises red blood cell levels, thickening the blood. This can lead to the formation of clots in veins or arteries, increasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, heart attack, and stroke.

### 2. **Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)**
- **Increased Blood Viscosity:** Thicker blood can raise blood pressure, which may lead to chronic hypertension and associated complications, such as heart disease.

### 3. **Heart Issues**
- **Cardiac Stress:** The heart must work harder to pump the thicker blood, which can lead to left ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement of the heart) and, over time, heart failure or other cardiac problems.

### 4. **Kidney Damage**
- **Overload of Kidneys:** Excessive red blood cell production can put stress on the kidneys, leading to potential kidney damage or failure, especially if combined with dehydration or the use of other performance-enhancing drugs.

### 5. **Impaired Immune Function**
- **Altered Hematopoiesis:** The manipulation of red blood cell production can impact other blood components, potentially weakening the immune system and making the body more susceptible to infections.

### 6. **Increased Risk of Seizures**
- **Neurological Effects:** Some users of EPO have reported seizures, likely due to altered blood flow and pressure within the brain.

### 7. **Overtraining Syndrome**
- **False Sense of Endurance:** With enhanced oxygen delivery, athletes may push their bodies beyond safe limits, leading to overtraining, injury, and prolonged recovery times.

### 8. **Death**
- **Fatal Risks:** The combination of these risks can be deadly, particularly if EPO is used without medical guidance. There have been cases of sudden death in athletes due to EPO-induced complications.

### 9. **Legal and Ethical Issues**
- **Doping Violations:** EPO use is banned in most competitive sports. Athletes caught using it face disqualification, suspension, and damage to their reputation.

Given these risks, the use of EPO without medical necessity and supervision is strongly discouraged.
