Saw cheek hollows on corpse at a funeral

This was at friend’s dad funeral party, as he had died and passed away. When I approached the carcass to pay my respects, I noticed he had insane hollow cheeks. He never had them when he was alive.

I am wondering why this would be. When you die they put cotton balls inside of your mouth. Maybe that or general weight loss from the death
